Dilemma (bp coyle)

What would you have done?

I agreed to babysit for this girl in work. I found her crying in the kitchen. She had been asked on a date and could find no one to take care of her two year old son, Tom. She hadn’t been out for months. This guy seemed different…

I volunteered despite having no experience with kids. She promises that the kid will be asleep before she leaves. I will have nothing to do but watch tv.

Sure enough, the boy is in bed when I get there. She shows me the kettle, gives me the remote and off she goes.

However, there is a ring at the door before the kettle evens boils. Suddenly I am faced with an emotional stranger who says he is Tom’s father. He has not been allowed visit for weeks and can he go in for a moment to kiss his son goodnight? And I let him. He seemed so genuine. I watched the whole time. He made me promise not to tell the child’s mother that he had visited.

I don’t think I did a bad thing. But I don’t feel like I did a good thing either.
