Small Town Blues (bp coyle)

Nobody knows who first introduced the drugs to the town. The high school kids were blamed of course, they always are, though there is no proof of it.

The fact is that they appeared just before Christmas of last year and soon everyone was hooked. Little blue pills that took all of the pain away. That killed the boredom and depression of living in a dying mining town.

A seriously dead mining town.

They provided a kick that made each day worth getting out of bed to find. Most of those in the town had never known a time when this was possible. Or could scarcely remember one. The mine had been winding down for years.

People were buzzing. People were flying. Before very long people were dying.  By New Year’s Day a town of three hundred people had lost nine residents.

It was all so sad. Parents, children, friends, lovers, all gone. But the little blue pills made everything better. It was hard to suppress a smile at the funerals.

A little nowhere place like that, the press were slow to notice the story. By the time they did there was no one left to interview.
