The Breakup (bp coyle)

‘Hey man. It’s Sunday! Why don’t we go see an afternoon movie and grab a few beers. It’ll be like the old days.’

‘I can’t Dave. I promised to do a thing with Alice.’

‘A thing?’

‘Yeah.’

‘Well gee. If you’ve got a thing then I guess we’ll have to do it another time.’

‘Okay. Well nice talking to you…’

‘It’s Alice isn’t it? She doesn’t like me.’

‘Oh she likes you fine. It’s just…’

‘What?’

‘She doesn’t really approve of you. She thinks your a bad influence.’

‘On you?’

‘Well yeah.’

‘Man you’re not five. And she’s not your mother. You are allowed to pick your own friends.’

‘It’s not like that.’

‘Is this because of what happened at her parents’ anniversary party? Because I apologised to her for that.’

‘That didn’t help. Look, Alice thinks I should hang out with you less. She doesn’t like me drinking so much or smoking pot. She blames you on all of my bad habits.’

‘And you let her?’

‘I don’t want to make her unhappy.’

‘Fine. Fine. Wait a minute. Are you breaking up with me?’

‘Dave…’

‘We’ve been friends for… forever.’

‘I’m sorry Dave. I’ve got to go.’
