They Who Stand and Wait (bp coyle)

The Watchers arrived a century ago.

They appeared overnight.  Across the world, in every city and town.  Nobody saw it happen.  One moment they were not there, the next they were.

Hovering silently.  Immovable.  Impassive things.

The initial reaction was one of fear, panic, confusion.  Answers were demanded.

The governments, the army, the scientists, they tried everything they knew.  To get them to respond, react, communicate.   New technologies were created in their endeavours.  New ways of thinking emerged.  To no avail.

It was the only thing in the news for many years.  The only thing anyone talked about, made shows about, sang songs about, told jokes about.

The mystery was so damn infuriating.  Were they really just observing us?  Or was their purpose more sinister?

But slowly, as nothing happened and no progress was made, fear began to fade. Interest began to fade.  Generations were born who knew nothing else but these ominous Watchers on every corner.

Tonight everything changed.  Tonight lights began to flicker on each and every one of the machines.  The same unintelligible pattern.

Armies have been mobilised.  News teams dispatched.  Politicians moved to shelters. Citizens cower in their homes.

Everyone waits…
