What sort of sandwich do you serve to an alien?
Not a question I had ever wondered about until one turned up at my back door last night and asked if she could have a cup of tea. She was quite apologetic, her shuttle had broken down and it would take some time before she could be collected. It was a nasty night out there, storm raging.
I invited her in and gave her my best towel to dry off with. The place was a mess and I wanted to make some sort of good impression. I also took out the good china, the set my mother left me.
It always seems rude to serve tea without something to eat along side it. I finally decided on ham and cheese. I was afraid to add some onion, she looked sweet but it can be hard to tell with aliens. I do like a dab of French mustard myself but I feared a wrong move might start some kind of interplanetary conflict.
She ate everything on her plate, though I think it may have just been politeness. But she did seem to enjoy dunking her rich tea biscuits.
